Sounds great, but how will it work?

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

--President Barack Obama, Inaugural Speech

The problem being, IMAO, that there are many enemies out there who seek not co-existence, but annihilation of all that they disagree with--things like free speech, any religious belief different than theirs, women driving, voting or showing their faces in public.

1 Yeah. I've always felt like one of the big problems in, for instance, the middle east is a complete lack of mutual interest and mutual respect on which to build anything. It's like going to someone in a swamp and saying "now there's your problem, you need to build your house on granite bedrock. How come you never thought of that?"
